Boeing’s F-15 Demo Team to Perform in the UK This Summer

Boeing has officially announced that its F-15 Demo Team will be gracing the skies of the United Kingdom this summer, marking a significant milestone in the aviation calendar.

The team is set to perform at two of the most prestigious airshows in the world—the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) and the Farnborough International Airshow, both taking place in July. Prior to their UK performances, the team will showcase their aerial prowess at the Spirit Of St. Louis Air Show & STEM Expo in the United States in June.

This summer’s aviation performances are set to captivate audiences with the highly anticipated debut display of Qatar’s F-15QA Advanced Eagle. The F-15QA, an advanced iteration of the venerable F-15 platform, made its formal public debut last year at the prestigious Dubai Airshow. During this event, Boeing’s skilled test pilot showcased the aircraft’s exceptional capabilities through a series of high-intensity manoeuvres. These included abrupt pulls, which demonstrate the aircraft’s agility and structural integrity; tailslides, where the aircraft ascends vertically before sliding backwards, showcasing its control at low speeds; and extreme high-alpha flying, which involves maintaining control at high angles of attack, highlighting the aircraft’s aerodynamic prowess and advanced flight control systems.

Derived from the F-15SA Advanced Eagle, which was developed for the Royal Saudi Air Force, the F-15QA serves as a testament to the continuous evolution of the F-15 platform. This variant has been meticulously tailored to meet the specific operational requirements of the Qatar Emiri Air Force. The F-15QA’s advanced avionics, radar systems, and electronic warfare capabilities make it one of the most sophisticated fighter jets in the world today. When queried by AEROSPACE magazine about the angle of attack (AoA) limit on the F-15QA (or its U.S. counterpart, the F-15EX), Boeing test pilot Matt Giese intriguingly responded, “There isn’t one.” This bold statement underscores the revolutionary nature of the aircraft’s design and its sophisticated fly-by-wire (FBW) system. Unlike traditional mechanical flight control systems, the FBW system in the F-15QA replaces manual flight controls with an electronic interface, allowing for more precise and responsive handling of the aircraft. This system continuously monitors and adjusts the control surfaces to optimize performance, effectively removing conventional AoA limitations and enabling the aircraft to perform manoeuvres that would be impossible with older technology.

The formidable power of the F-15QA is further amplified by its two General Electric F110-GE-129 turbofan engines. Each of these high-performance engines can produce nearly 30,000 pounds of thrust when operating at full afterburner.
