NI International Airshow Announces First Performers for 2024 Event

Portrush, Northern Ireland – The NI International Airshow, the only airshow in Northern Ireland this year and one of the few on the island of Ireland, has revealed the first batch of performers set to take to the skies on Saturday, 7th September, and Sunday, 8th September 2024. This year’s lineup promises an exhilarating mix of historical aircraft, modern military jets, and breathtaking aerobatic displays, ensuring a spectacular event for aviation enthusiasts and families alike.

Headlining the historic segment of the airshow is the Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) Lancaster. Operating from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, the BBMF’s mission is to maintain and display priceless artefacts of national heritage in airworthy condition, commemorating those who have fallen in service to their country. The Avro Lancaster, one of the most famous and successful RAF heavy bombers of World War II, will be a highlight. Lancaster PA474, built at the Vickers Armstrong Broughton factory in 1945, is one of only two airworthy Lancasters remaining out of the 7,377 built, making its appearance a significant tribute to history.

For those seeking high-speed thrills, the RAF Typhoon Display Team will showcase the formidable capabilities of the Typhoon FGR.Mk 4. Known for its agility and power, the Typhoon will perform a series of jaw-dropping manoeuvres, demonstrating its prowess in air policing, peace support, and high-intensity conflict. Equipped with advanced cockpit technology and the Helmet Equipment Assembly (HEA), the Typhoon’s display will highlight the aircraft’s cutting-edge design and the pilot’s exceptional skill.

Adding to the excitement, former British Aerobatic Champions Tom Cassells and Michael Pickin, collectively known as ‘The Starlings,’ will bring their high-octane close-formation aerobatics to the show. Flying the latest Extra NG aircraft from Germany, the duo will perform gyroscopic tumbles, opposition manoeuvres, and formation aerobatics, offering photographers and spectators alike a visual feast of precision flying and dynamic stunts.

The Norwegian Historic Squadron will present the Vampire, a first-generation jet fighter that saw service in the post-war period. Designed in 1942 and entering service in 1946, the Vampire F3 holds historical significance as the first jet aircraft to fly across the Atlantic under its own power. The display will feature the Vampire in No. 502 (Ulster) Squadron colours, providing a fitting tribute to its storied past and its connection to the region.

The world-renowned Aerosuperbatics Wingwalkers will perform breathtaking acrobatics atop 1940s Boeing Stearman biplanes. Known for their daring stunts and energetic routines, the wingwalkers will execute loops, rolls, and inverted flights at speeds of up to 150 mph, delivering a heart-pounding spectacle of aerial prowess.

The OV-10B Bronco, a turboprop light attack and observation aircraft, will be showcased by the Bronco Demo Team. Designed for counter-insurgency combat, the Bronco’s display will emphasize its slow flight capabilities, agility, and manoeuvrability, providing continuous entertainment and a demonstration of its tactical versatility.

The Grob 115E Tutor T Mark 1, used by the RAF for flying instruction and air experience, will be flown by the RAF Tutor Display Team. Though not as powerful as dedicated aerobatic aircraft, the Tutor’s display will highlight the pilot’s skill in maintaining energy and executing smooth, precise manoeuvres, offering a unique and challenging performance.

Richard Goodwin’s Jet Pitts, a custom-built aircraft combining a Pitts S2S fuselage with innovative wing design and dual propulsion systems, will deliver a unique aerial entertainment experience. With two ATM Lynx Jet turbines and an 8.5 Ltr Lycoming engine, the Jet Pitts offers unparalleled thrust and agility, promising a standout performance.

The Irish Coast Guard S-92, renowned for its safety features and reliability, will perform a search and rescue demonstration in collaboration with the RNLI Lifeboat. As this will be the final S92 demo before transitioning to the new AgustaWestland AW 189, audiences will witness a poignant and impressive display of lifesaving capabilities.

The NI International Airshow 2024 promises an exhilarating weekend of aviation excellence, historical tributes, and cutting-edge displays. Stay tuned for further announcements as more performers are revealed in the lead-up to this unmissable event.
