Swedish Air Force to Mark 100 Years with Grand Celebrations in 2026
Linkoping, Sweden – As the Swedish Air Force approaches its centennial in 2026, preparations are in full swing for a year of grand celebrations and memorable events that honour a century of aerial excellence and national defence.
This significant milestone, marking a full century since the establishment of Sweden’s independent air branch, promises to beautifully showcase both the rich and diverse history as well as the cutting-edge advancements of the nation’s remarkable aviation prowess. The centennial celebrations will unfold during the summer months of 2026, culminating in a grand airshow at Malmen Airbase in Linköping.
The Swedish Air Force was born out of necessity in 1925, following the lessons learned during World War I. Recognizing the critical role of military aviation, Sweden merged its army and naval aviation units into a distinct defense branch. This strategic move led to the formation of four air corps, later reorganized into flotillas, stationed in Västerås, Linköping, Roslagen, and Östersund. These bases became the backbone of Sweden’s aerial defense, fostering advancements that would propel the Air Force into a modern force respected worldwide.
Over the decades, the Swedish Air Force has evolved, embracing technological innovations and expanding its capabilities. From the early biplanes of the 1920s to the sophisticated JAS 39 Gripen fighters of today, the Air Force has consistently demonstrated its commitment to maintaining air superiority and safeguarding national security. This enduring legacy is set to be celebrated extensively throughout 2026.
The centennial celebrations will unfold during the summer months of 2026, culminating in a grand airshow on August 22–23 at Malmen Airbase in Linköping. This event is anticipated to attract aviation enthusiasts from across the nation and beyond, continuing the tradition of past events that have drawn over 100,000 visitors. The last major celebration at Malmen was in 2016, when the Air Force marked its 90th anniversary with an impressive display of both historic and modern aircraft, drawing around 130,000 spectators.
Leading up to the summer, a series of key events will highlight the Air Force’s storied history and its current achievements. Veterans Day on May 29 at Gärdet in Stockholm will honour those who have served, while Almedal Week in Visby from June 23–26 will feature discussions and exhibitions celebrating the Air Force’s contributions to national defence. On July 1, Stockholm will host the official birthday celebrations, further emphasizing the Air Force’s integral role in Sweden’s heritage.
In preparation for the monumental 2026 celebrations, the Swedish Air Force is concentrating its efforts on strengthening its capabilities and organizing extensive events. As a result, no aviation day will take place in 2025, allowing the Air Force to focus its resources and energy on the upcoming centennial festivities.
Colonel Mats Antonson, head of the helicopter flotilla, expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming Jubilee Flight Days at Malmen: “It feels very gratifying to organize the Jubilee Flight Days in a place where flying is an obvious part of everyday life and has been so since the air baron Carl Cederström established flying in the city back in 1911. We are extra motivated because we were forced to cancel the 2023 Flight Day which would have taken place at Malmen.”
The 2026 airshow at Malmen is set to feature an impressive and diverse array of aircraft, showcasing both historic and modern types, thereby reflecting the Swedish Air Force’s remarkable evolution over the past century. Among the aircraft that are more likely to be on display will be the versatile JAS 39 Gripen in its C, D, and E variants, which are renowned for their advanced avionics and exceptional manoeuvrability. Additionally, the Saab 340 AWACS will take part in the event to demonstrate Sweden’s sophisticated airborne warning and control capabilities, while the rugged C-130 Hercules transport aircraft will showcase the Air Force’s formidable logistical strength and versatility in various operational scenarios.
Helicopter enthusiasts will be treated to the powerful UH-60 Black Hawk and the nimble NH90, alongside the sleek AW109. These aircraft not only represent the technological advancements of the Swedish Air Force but also its commitment to maintaining a diverse and capable fleet ready to meet various defence and humanitarian missions.
Historic aircraft will also take flight, offering a nostalgic glimpse into the past. The Swedish Air Force’s extensive collection of retired planes will be on display, allowing visitors to witness firsthand the machines that have shaped Sweden’s aerial heritage over the decades.
The Swedish Air Force’s 100-year journey is a testament to resilience, innovation, and unwavering dedication to national security. From its inception in the aftermath of World War I to its current status as a modern and formidable air force, the century-long evolution highlights Sweden’s strategic foresight and commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region.
As the centennial celebrations approach, anticipation builds for a series of events that will not only honor the past but also inspire future generations of aviators and defence personnel. The year 2026 is set to be a landmark occasion, celebrating a legacy of excellence and looking forward to continued success in the years to come.
