The Last Airworthy Sabre in Europe to Grace the Skies at the Midlands Air Festival 2025

Ragley Hall, UK – In the world of aviation, few aircraft command the same level of reverence and admiration that the North American F-86 Sabre does among enthusiasts and professionals alike. This iconic fighter jet, renowned for its impressive exploits during the Korean War, is set to make a highly anticipated and triumphant debut at the prestigious Midlands Air Festival in 2025.

The arrival of the F-86 Sabre is expected to draw significant crowds and generate considerable excitement, as it showcases its historical significance and remarkable engineering prowess.

The festival will feature Europe’s only airworthy Sabre, a Canadair CL-13 Mk.6, operated by the esteemed Mistral Warbirds based in France. This particular aircraft is the last of its kind, license-built by Canadair, and bears a striking USAF camouflage scheme that harks back to its storied past.

The F-86 Sabre holds a legendary status in aviation history as the first swept-wing jet fighter operated by the United States Air Force (USAF). During the Korean War, it achieved an astonishing kill ratio of 10 to 1 against its Soviet adversary, the MiG-15. Its prowess in combat was not only a testament to its advanced engineering but also to the skill and bravery of its pilots. While genuine F-86 Sabres have become a rarity in Europe, the presence of this Canadair-built variant ensures that the legacy of the Sabre continues to inspire future generations.

The Midlands Air Festival, known for its commitment to delivering exceptional aerial displays, is thrilled to host this historic aircraft. In a statement from the festival organizers, they expressed their dedication to the audience: “The Midlands Air Festival always tries to keep our word to our loyal audience. At this year’s show, we had booked the F86 Mk6 fighter jet to display. However, due to a mix of weather and operational reasons, we could not get it here in time, so we are bringing this exciting fighter jet back for the 2025 show!”

The Sabre, originally built for the Luftwaffe and one of the 9,860 produced during its production run, will be piloted by the renowned Frederick Akary. Akary, a welcome visitor to the UK, is celebrated for his displays in the Hawker Sea Fury and P51D ‘Moonbeam Mc Shine’. With over 140 displays and more than 17,000 flying hours, his expertise promises a breathtaking performance.

The festival will take place over three days, starting on Friday, May 30, 2025. The opening day will feature hot air balloons tethering, including some spectacular special shapes, followed by a stunning mass ascent at 18:30. The evening will culminate with evening air displays and the awe-inspiring Nightfire display, featuring pyrotechnic aircraft, a hot air balloon glow, and a dazzling fireworks finale.

The second day will begin with another hot air balloon mass ascent, offering a unique opportunity to enjoy breakfast with the balloons. This will lead to a day filled with high-octane aerobatics, graceful glider displays, and wartime aircraft performances, climaxing with yet another breathtaking balloon ascent.

The final day of the festival will mirror the excitement of the previous days, beginning with a spectacular balloon mass ascent. Attendees can once again enjoy breakfast amidst the balloons before a thrilling day of aerial entertainment. The festival will conclude with a special balloon display, marking the end of a truly memorable event.

For aviation enthusiasts and history buffs alike, the appearance of the F-86 Sabre at the Midlands Air Festival 2025 is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness a piece of aviation history in action. The festival promises to be an unforgettable celebration of aerial prowess, innovation, and the enduring legacy of one of the most iconic fighter jets ever built.
