Hellenic Phantom Among the Last Aircraft Announced for RIAT 2024

RAF Fairford, United Kingdom – In a thrilling announcement that has aviation enthusiasts buzzing, the organizers of the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) have revealed the final aircraft for the 2024 event. Among the most exciting updates is the Hellenic Air Force’s decision to send a pair of F-4 Phantoms, in addition to their previously announced F-16s. These legendary jets will arrive on Friday afternoon and will be on static display alongside other NATO fighter aircraft at the western end of the showground on Saturday and Sunday.

The addition of the Hellenic F-4 Phantoms is particularly significant, as these aircraft are renowned for their distinguished service history and iconic design. What makes this announcement even more extraordinary is that there are already two F-4 Phantoms from the Turkish Air Force already confirmed for the event. Having two Phantoms at a single airshow is incredibly rare, but having four is an unprecedented treat for aviation aficionados. This unique gathering of Phantoms is expected to draw considerable attention and admiration from attendees, offering a rare opportunity to see these storied aircraft up close.

Adding to the excitement, the Royal Navy has confirmed the addition of an extra Wildcat helicopter for static display. This helicopter will complement the Black Cats pair featured in the flying display. Positioned at the centre of the showground as a showcase item for Leonardo, the Wildcat will be equipped with a fit of dummy weapons, offering visitors an up-close look at its advanced capabilities and design features.

The United States Air Force in Europe has further enriched the static display lineup with the addition of two F-16s from Spangdahlem Air Base and a C-130 Hercules from Ramstein Air Base. These additions bring the total number of jets in the ‘Viper Line’ to over twenty! The F-16, known for its versatility and combat performance, and the C-130, a workhorse in military transport, will provide valuable insights into the operational capabilities of the USAF.

Additionally, a Westland Lynx AH7 from Historic Helicopters will be present at RIAT 2024. This helicopter, which has a rich operational history, will serve as an aerial photography platform, capturing stunning aerial views of the event and adding a historical element to the proceedings.

In a change of plans, the Finnish Air Force will now bring Hawk Mk.66 aircraft to RIAT, replacing the previously planned Mk.51 aircraft. While this adjustment means the Midnight Hawks display will not feature smoke winders, the rarity and uniqueness of the Mk.66 airframes are expected to be a welcome sight for aviation enthusiasts who appreciate less commonly seen aircraft. Finland augmented its Hawk fleet in 2007 by sourcing 18 low-hour Hawk 66s from Switzerland. They entered service after modification and upgrade work between 2011 and 2013. The Hawks which carry an attractive white-red colour scheme are scheduled to remain in service until the late 2030s.

However, not all news is positive. The Royal Danish Air Force has announced that their Challenger aircraft will no longer be able to attend RIAT 2024, marking a notable absence from the lineup. Despite this, the overall array of aircraft remains robust and diverse, promising a captivating experience for all attendees.

As final preparations for RIAT 2024 come together, anticipation is building for what promises to be a spectacular showcase of aviation excellence. With contributions from air forces around the world, the event is set to offer a unique opportunity to witness an array of aircraft, from historic models to cutting-edge technology, all gathered in one place.
