The airshow first took to the skies in September 1993 over Marsamxett Harbour but later moved to Malta International Airport. The flying displays have also graced the skies over Smart City and St. Paul’s Bay, where the airshow was last held in 2023, featuring flying displays at St. Paul’s Bay and static displays at Malta International Airport.

The event has been active from 1993 to 2021, with notable exceptions in 2018 and 2019 due to financial constraints and in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After a brief return in 2021, the airshow was cancelled again in 2022. The event made a successful comeback in 2023 and has now settled into a biennial schedule.

The Malta International Airshow has a reputation for attracting rare and exotic aircraft. In 2023, the United States Air Force Boeing TC-135W Stratolifter made its first appearance at a European airshow in Malta. Spectators were treated to displays by some of the best pilots in Europe, including the Air Wing of the Armed Forces of Malta fleet, the Flying Bulls with their North American B-25J “Mitchell” bomber, Lockheed P-38L “Lightning” twin-boom fighter, and two Alpha Jets. Other notable participants included the SoloTurk F-16 solo display team, the Polish Air Force F-16 Tiger Demo Team, the Swiss Hornet Solo Display team, the Slovenian Air Force and Air Defence’s Pilatus PC-9M Hudournik Solo Display, and the iconic Red Arrows.

The airshow owes much of its success to a dedicated team of volunteers, now numbering around 200. These volunteers, hailing mostly from Malta but also from various international locales, come together every September to be part of the Malta International Airshow. Their tireless efforts have helped the event gain recognition as one of Malta’s largest gatherings.

Volunteers are involved in every aspect of the show, from greeting aircrew on arrival to assisting the general public with queries. Their commitment and enthusiasm are integral to the seamless execution of this grand event.

As the countdown to September 2025 begins, anticipation is building for what promises to be an unforgettable experience. With a rich history and a passionate community of volunteers and aviation enthusiasts, the Malta International Airshow is poised to soar to new heights.
