NATO & Czech Air Force Days in Ostrava 2024 Cancelled Amid Critical Flood Situation

Ostrava, Czechia – In a historic and challenging decision, the organizers of the 24th NATO Days in Ostrava & Czech Air Force Days have announced the cancellation of this year’s event, originally scheduled for September 21 and 22 at the Ostrava airport.

The cancellation follows a thorough evaluation of the current critical circumstances, primarily the severe flooding that has hit the region. The organizers emphasized their solidarity with the numerous emergency responders and services currently engaged in flood relief efforts.

“It was the most unprecedentedly difficult decision for us in the entire 24-year history of the event,” the organizing committee stated. “We think that the current difficult situation is not suitable for holding the event and we want to express solidarity with all the deployed members of the Fire and Rescue Service, the Police of the Czech Republic, the Army of the Czech Republic, rescuers, city policemen, and many others who are and will be deployed to deal with the consequences of the flood and especially with the citizens affected by it.”

The decision was also influenced by the heavily waterlogged terrain at the Ostrava airport, which has made it impossible to start the final preparations typically initiated on the Monday before the event. The deteriorated condition of access roads further complicated logistics.

“We believe that our supporters will understand the situation and we will look forward to NATO Days in Ostrava & Czech Air Force Days 2025 on September 20-21, 2025!” the statement continued.

The event, known for showcasing military and security capabilities, has been a significant annual gathering. However, the pressing need for resources and personnel to be allocated to flood response efforts has taken precedence. Both the Integrated Rescue System (IRS) components and the Army of the Czech Republic are critically needed elsewhere at this time.

“We thank them all very much for their current commitment and wish them lots of strength,” the organizers concluded.

While the cancellation marks a notable moment in the event’s history, the organizers and participants are hopeful and already looking forward to reconvening in 2025, stronger and more resilient.
