RIAT 2025: Spanish Typhoons and SAR Helicopters Take Center Stage

Fairford, UK – The Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) 2025, scheduled for July 18-20 at RAF Fairford, has unveiled an exhilarating update this week, spotlighting the Spanish Air & Space Force and a pair of unique civilian aircraft. This announcement sets the stage for an extraordinary airshow that continues to captivate aviation enthusiasts worldwide.

In a standout reveal, the Spanish Air & Space Force will bring their C.16 Tifón—better known as the Eurofighter Typhoon—back to RIAT’s flying display for the first time since 2016. This solo performance promises high-speed thrills, though the specific squadron remains unconfirmed for now. Adding to the excitement, as part of the airshow’s “Eyes in the Skies” theme, they’ll also showcase a Sikorsky S-76C helicopter, a Search and Rescue asset making its debut in Spanish service at a British airshow, stationed in the static display.

Since its inception in 1971, RIAT has grown from a modest event into one of the world’s premier military airshows, drawing crowds eager to see cutting-edge aircraft and historic machines alike. Held annually at RAF Fairford, it has become a celebrated tradition, blending military precision with civilian innovation. The 2025 edition builds on this legacy, with this week’s update emphasizing international flair and the vital role of search and rescue operations.

The SAR theme extends to the civilian lineup, with two noteworthy additions joining the static display. A German Huey, now in civilian hands but retaining its military SAR livery, will return to Fairford, its distinctive rotor thrum a nostalgic echo of its frequent appearances at Air Tattoos in the 1990s and 2000s. Alongside it, the Channel Islands Air Search will present their Britten-Norman Islander, a red-and-white workhorse operated by the charity to provide fixed-wing SAR support across the English Channel near Jersey and Guernsey. Both aircraft promise to enrich the show’s narrative of aerial lifesaving.

This week’s update isn’t just about aircraft—it also reflects the meticulous planning behind RIAT. Recently, the event’s CEO and Head of Air Operations attended the European Airshow Council Convention in Prague, where flight safety topped the agenda. The convention buzzed with talks on sustainability, emerging technologies, and airshow best practices while offering a chance to connect with pilots and European Air Arms representatives. These discussions sparked ideas for potential aircraft additions, though official confirmations are still pending. The event also celebrated industry peers, with EAC Awards honouring figures like Kurt Plyson of the Belgian Air Force, Andrej Fiorelli of the Slovenian Armed Forces, and the German EF2000 and NH90 demo teams.

For RIAT fans, the excitement doesn’t stop here. As is customary, aircraft updates will roll out every Thursday leading up to the July event, keeping the public in the loop on confirmations and any lineup tweaks. This weekly cadence ensures the buzz builds steadily toward the airshow’s opening day.

The Spanish Air & Space Force’s contributions—the dynamic Typhoon and the rare Sikorsky S-76C—inject a fresh international dimension into RIAT 2025’s flying and static displays. Coupled with the German Huey and the Channel Islands Islander, they deepen the SAR focus, bridging military and civilian aviation heritage. As July 18-20 approaches, these Thursday updates will continue to fuel anticipation, promising an airshow that’s as diverse as it is unforgettable.
