Tragic Fouga Magister Crash at Lavandou Airshow

Le Lavandou, France – A devastating incident occurred on Friday afternoon during the commemorations of the 80th anniversary of Operation Dragoon in Provence, when a Fouga CM170R Magister (F-AZPZ) aircraft tragically crashed into the sea off the coast of Le Lavandou. The accident resulted in the death of the pilot and the complete destruction of the aircraft.

The crash took place around 5 PM as the pilot, a 65-year-old former fighter pilot and passionate aviation enthusiast Didier Berger, was performing an aerobatic display. Rescue teams, including the maritime gendarmerie, the nautical brigade, firefighters, and the Navy, were immediately dispatched to the scene. Despite their swift efforts, the body of the pilot was only recovered nearly two hours after the crash.

The pilot’s deep-rooted passion for aviation was a family heritage, marked by a tragic history. His father, Gérard Berger, also lost his life in a similar accident in 2003. Gérard Berger was performing aerobatic manoeuvres in the same model of aircraft, a Fouga Magister, during an airshow in Ajaccio when his plane crashed on a vacant lot near the Corse du Sud airport. The eerie similarity between the two incidents has led to an outpouring of tributes and condolences on social media from former military personnel and the aviation community, highlighting the family’s enduring love for vintage and aerobatic aircraft.

In response to the crash, an investigation has been initiated. The investigative teams will meticulously analyze the wreckage and recovered components to determine whether mechanical failure was a contributing factor. Additionally, forensic analyses will be performed to ascertain if the pilot experienced any medical issues that could have led to the accident.

The airshow, which had just commenced and was set to feature performances by renowned aerobatic teams such as the Patrouille de France, was immediately cancelled following the tragic event. The cancellation serves both as a mark of respect for the fallen pilot and as a precautionary measure while investigations proceed.

This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the inherent risks associated with aerobatic displays and the profound dedication of those who pursue their passion for aviation despite the dangers. The aviation community and spectators alike mourn the loss of a skilled and passionate pilot whose legacy, much like his father’s, will be remembered for his contributions to the art of aerobatics.

As the investigation continues, further details will be awaited to provide a clearer understanding of the factors leading to this unfortunate accident. For now, the thoughts and prayers of many are with the pilot’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
