Unique Airworthy Saab B17 Among Latest Additions to the Duxford Battle of Britain Air Show

Duxford, UK – The Imperial War Museums (IWM) have announced an exciting update to the participation list for the upcoming Battle of Britain Air Show, scheduled for the 14th and 15th of September. Among the latest additions is the unique airworthy Saab B17, a rare aircraft that promises to be a highlight of this historic event.

The Battle of Britain Air Show offers an immersive experience, transporting visitors back to the summer of 1940. Historic Duxford will come alive with vintage aviation displays that reflect the stories of those who served at RAF Duxford, including iconic aircraft such as Spitfires, Hurricanes, and the Lancaster bomber.

Modern and Vintage RAF Aircraft Line-Up

RAF F-35B Lightning Role Demo (Saturday Only)
The F-35B Lightning, the RAF’s state-of-the-art multi-role combat aircraft, will perform a role demonstration on Saturday. Known for its stealth capabilities and advanced avionics, the F-35B is capable of vertical takeoff and landing, showcasing its versatility and power in a display that is sure to impress.

RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Avro Lancaster
The Avro Lancaster, a four-engine heavy bomber, played a crucial role during World War II. This iconic aircraft was instrumental in the Allied bombing campaign, and its presence at the show will be a poignant tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of those who served.

RAF Typhoon Display Team
The RAF Typhoon FGR4, a modern multi-role combat aircraft, will demonstrate its power and agility in a dynamic display. The Typhoon Display Team will perform high-speed maneuvers and aerobatics, highlighting the technological advancements of contemporary military aviation.

RAF Falcons Display Team
The RAF Falcons, the UK’s premier military parachute display team, will thrill spectators with an exhilarating free-fall display. Performing advanced maneuvers at speeds of up to 120mph, the Falcons’ precision and skill are sure to captivate the audience.

RAF Tutor Display Team
The Grob Tutor T Mark 1, operated by RAF Flying Training Schools and Air Experience Flights, will be showcased by the RAF Tutor Display Team. The display will emphasize the pilot’s finesse and control, demonstrating the aircraft’s capabilities in training new pilots.

Historic Aircraft Highlights

Mustangs
Twi P-51 Mustangs ‘Miss Helen’ and ‘Jersey Jerk’ will take to the skies. The P-51 Mustang, an American long-range, single-seat fighter, played a crucial role in achieving air superiority during World War II. ‘Miss Helen’ and ‘Jersey Jerk’ will bring history to life with their powerful Merlin engines and sleek design, reminding us of the Mustang’s pivotal role in the Allied victory.

Hawker Hurricanes
Four Hawker Hurricane Mk Is will also take to the skies. The Hurricane, often overshadowed by the Spitfire, was equally crucial in the Battle of Britain. Its robust design and firepower were instrumental in securing victory against the Luftwaffe.

Spitfires
A total of 13 Spitfires will grace the skies, including variants Mk Vb, Mk I, Mk Vc, Mk IX, T9, Mk XIV, and PR Mk XI. The Spitfire, celebrated for its role in the Battle of Britain, remains a symbol of British resilience and engineering excellence. These aircraft will join the Hurricanes to perform the famous Duxford Big Wing formation, a spectacle that pays homage to the brave pilots who defended the UK.

Unique Saab B17
The only airworthy Saab B17, this unique aircraft was used by the Swedish Air Force during World War II as a dive bomber and target-tug. Its large undercarriage doubles as dive brakes, making it a fascinating addition to the show.

  • Westland Lysander (x2): Two variants, Mk III SD and Mk I, known for their role in covert operations.

  • Gloster Gladiator (x2): Both Mk I and Mk II, iconic biplanes of the interwar period.

  • Avro Anson C19: A British twin-engine multi-role aircraft.

  • Navy Wings Fairey Swordfish Mk I: A British biplane torpedo bomber.

  • Beechcraft Model 17 Staggerwing (x3): Three of these luxurious biplanes will be on display.

  • Fokker DR1 (replica): A replica of the famous German WWI triplane.

  • Republic P-47D Thunderbolt: An American fighter known for its ruggedness.

  • Hawker Fury FB II: The last propeller-driven fighter to serve with the Royal Navy

  • Hawker Nimrod Mk I and Hawker Fury: British biplanes showcasing early aviation design.

  • Grumman Wildcat FM2 and Grumman Bearcat: American naval fighters.

  • Piper L-4 Grasshopper: A light observation aircraft used during WWII.

  • AIRCO DH9, Royal Aircraft Factory BE2c (replica) and Albatros D.V (replica): Representing WWI aviation.

  • De Havilland DH82a Tiger Moth (x2): Classic British training biplanes.

  • Bücker Bü 133 Jungmeister: An advanced trainer of the Luftwaffe in the 1930s.

  • Royal Aircraft Factory SE5a (replica): A replica of the WWI British fighter.

  • Miles Magister: A British pre-war training aircraft.
