The Malta International Airshow 2023, held on the 23rd and 24th of September, was a remarkable event despite the challenging weather conditions that led to the cancellation of Sunday’s flying displays. The event was impeccably organized, with the flying displays at St. Paul’s Bay and the static display at Malta International Airport, offering aviation enthusiasts a comprehensive experience.

The static display at Malta International Airport was a captivating sight, boasting a diverse collection of aircraft from different countries. Showcasing their impressive capabilities, the United States Air Force presented the rare Boeing TC-135W Stratolifter, making its first appearance at a European Airshow in Malta. This aircraft serves a crucial role in crew training, especially for missions like the Rivet Joint. Additionally, the German Air Force had on display two Eurofighter EF-2000 Typhoons, cutting-edge multirole fighters known for their agility and proficiency in various missions, thanks to their advanced avionics and weapon systems.

The Italian Guardia Costiera's AgustaWestland AW139CP, a variant of the renowned AW139, stood out on the static display with its exceptional capabilities in search and rescue operations. It was not the only Italian aircraft making waves; the ATR P-72B from the Guardia di Finanza added to the lineup, highlighting its importance in maritime surveillance. Joining these impressive machines was the AgustaWestland AW169, another versatile aircraft in service with the Guardia di Finanza, excelling in law enforcement and operational duties, underscoring Italy's robust air fleet diversity at the airshow.

The Italian Navy showcased their impressive AgustaWestland EH101 helicopter at the static display. This aircraft is well-regarded for its long-range capabilities and heavy-lifting capacity, making it ideal for various roles such as transport, search and rescue, and anti-submarine warfare. Another eye-catching display was the Italian Polizia di Stato's AgustaWestland UH-139C helicopter, used extensively for law enforcement tasks like surveillance and transportation. Joining them was the Irish Air Corps with the versatile Pilatus PC-12NG aircraft, known for its efficiency in missions ranging from transport and surveillance to medical evacuations.

The European Pilot Academy proudly displayed a variety of training aircraft models at the event. Among them were the Diamond DA42 Twin Star, Piper PA-28 Cherokee, Tecnam P92, Tecnam P2002 Sierra, and Pipistrel Virus, demonstrating the academy's dedication to providing top-notch pilot training. Additionally, Harmony Jets presented the Dassault Falcon 10, a renowned business jet highly acclaimed for its remarkable blend of speed and luxurious comfort, making it a popular choice for corporate and VIP travel needs.

The Malta Aviation Museum showcased a collection of classic aircraft, such as the DH.82 Tiger Moth and Piper J-3 CUB, providing visitors with a fascinating glimpse into aviation history. In addition, the Professional Aviation Training Academy displayed various training aircraft models, which included the Tecnam P2002, Tecnam P92JS, Tecnam P2006t MKii, and Cessna Reims C182F. Furthermore, the Air Wing of the Armed Forces of Malta exhibited operational aircraft like the Beechcraft B200 Super King Air, AgustaWestland AW139, Britten-Norman BN-2T, and SA 316 Alouette III, presenting Malta's diverse aviation capabilities to the audience.

The Polish Air Force’s Lockheed Martin C-130E, a versatile transport aircraft used for a wide range of missions, including troop transport, cargo airlift, and humanitarian aid delivery, was a significant attraction. Joining it was the Romanian Air Force’s Antonov AN-26, a twin-engine turboprop military transport aircraft known for its reliability and versatility. The two Royal Navy’s Avenger T1, used for training Royal Navy observers and pilots equipped with advanced avionics and simulation systems, drew considerable interest. Also catching the eye was the Royal Netherlands Air Force’s Eurocopter AS532 Cougar, a medium-lift helicopter used for transport, SAR, and medical evacuation missions. Moreover, the French Air and Space Force’s Socata TBM700, a light, single-engine turboprop aircraft known for its versatility and performance and often utilized for liaison and training missions, was also featured on the static display.

The flying displays kicked off in grand style as the Air Wing of the Armed Forces of Malta took to the skies to open the event. Spectators were treated to a captivating formation flypast showcasing the Britten-Norman Islander, Aérospatiale Alouette III, and AgustaWestland AW139. The Islander entertained the crowds with a short solo display while the helicopters repositioned to perform their own synchronized flypasts. The display culminated with a dramatic SAR demonstration by the AW139, leaving everyone in awe of the capabilities on display.

Making its Malta debut was the Slovenian Air Force and Air Defence’s Pilatus PC-9M Hudournik Solo Display, which showcased the aircraft’s agility and precision with impressive aerobatic manoeuvres. The PC-9M is a turboprop trainer and light attack aircraft aircraft known for its reliability and performance in training missions. Attendees were treated to a spectacular performance as the skilled pilot, Captain Andrej Fiorelli, demonstrated the full capabilities of this versatile aircraft to the delight of the crowd.

A surprising highlight of the airshow was the captivating performance by the Dassault Falcon 7X from the esteemed Maltese company Skyfirst. Piloted by skilled Dassault test pilots “DUC” and “TOM,” celebrating SKYFIRST's 10th anniversary, the Falcon 7X showcased its remarkable capabilities through dynamic manoeuvres, featuring both high-speed passes and precision tight turns. Skyfirst, a well-regarded entity in the Maltese aviation industry, is greatly recognized for its proficiency in the operation and maintenance of business jets, thus further enhancing the allure of their impressive display at the event.

Returning to the show for the first time since 2012 were The Flying Bulls from Austria, showcasing a spectacular lineup that included the historic North American B-25J “Mitchell” bomber and the iconic Lockheed P-38L “Lightning” twin-boom fighter. Among their fleet were also a dynamic duo of Fairchild Dornier Alpha Jets, wowing the audience with their elegant aerobatic manoeuvres. It was a thrilling display, highlighting the rich aviation history and precise flying skills of the renowned Flying Bulls team.

The airshow showcased three European fast jet solo displays, each bringing its own unique flair and excitement to the audience. Commenced with the ever-popular Turkish Air Force SoloTurk F-16 solo display team. Renowned for its dynamic and aggressive performances, the SoloTurk team did not disappoint. They highlighted the F-16’s exceptional agility and power through a series of high-speed passes, tight turns, and impressive use of flares. The pilot’s skill was evident as the jet manoeuvred seamlessly through the sky, leaving the audience in awe of the aircraft’s capabilities. The SoloTurk team has a long-standing reputation for thrilling displays, and their performance at this airshow further solidified their status as one of the premier solo display teams in the world.

Following the exhilarating SoloTurk performance, the Polish Air Force’s F-16 Tiger Demo Team took to the skies. This team captivated the Maltese audience with an energetic and engaging performance that featured dramatic afterburner passes and precise manoeuvres. Making a grand entrance, the F-16 Tiger Demo arrived from behind the crowd on full afterburner, catching everyone by surprise and immediately grabbing their attention. The jet roared through the air, its afterburners lighting up the sky and creating a thrilling spectacle. This was the team’s first display in Malta, and they certainly made a memorable impression. The performance was meticulously choreographed, with each manoeuvre executed flawlessly, culminating in a series of spectacular flare releases that drew gasps and applause from the crowd. The Polish Air Force’s display demonstrated not only the power and agility of the F-16 but also the exceptional skill and precision of its pilots.

Concluding the impressive lineup was the Swiss Air Force’s F/A-18C Hornet, piloted by Captain Yannick “Fönsi” Zanata in what was his farewell international display. Captain Zanata treated spectators to an aggressive and high-energy show marked by tight turns, rapid climbs, and an extensive array of flares. His skilful command of the aircraft was evident as he pushed the F/A-18C Hornet to its limits, showcasing its power and agility. The performance was a fitting tribute to Captain Zanata’s career, leaving a lasting impression on all who witnessed it. The Swiss Air Force’s display was a masterclass in aerial manoeuvres, with each movement executed with precision and grace. The extensive use of flares added a dramatic flair to the performance, creating a visually stunning and exhilarating experience for the audience

The Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows, brought an explosion of colour and precision to the Maltese skies with their renowned display featuring eight BAE Hawk T1 jets. The Red Arrows, known globally for their breathtaking aerobatic performances, did not disappoint. Their routine included a series of intricate formations, synchronized aerobatics, and a stunning flypast that painted the Maltese flag in the sky, leaving spectators in awe. The precision and coordination required for such a display are immense, and the Red Arrows executed each manoeuvre flawlessly, demonstrating why they are considered one of the premier aerobatic teams in the world. The vibrant trails of red, white, and blue smoke added a dramatic visual element to their performance, creating a spectacle that was both thrilling and patriotic.

The flying displays concluded with a flypast by the Air Wing of the Armed Forces of Malta’s Aérospatiale Alouette III, performing the flag flypast. This helicopter has been a steadfast workhorse for the Maltese Armed Forces, serving in various roles, including search and rescue (SAR), transport, and maritime patrol. As the Alouette III made its graceful pass, proudly carrying the Maltese flag, it was a poignant moment for many in attendance. The helicopter is set for imminent retirement, marking the end of an era for the Maltese Armed Forces. Its flypast was not just a display of aerial prowess but also a tribute to its decades of reliable service. The Alouette III has been a symbol of resilience and dedication, and its retirement will be a significant milestone in the history of the Maltese Air Wing.

The event was also set to include performances by the Air Malta Airbus A320neo and the Swiss Air Force Patrouille Suisse. The Air Malta Airbus A320neo was expected to showcase the latest in commercial aviation technology with a display that would highlight its state-of-the-art features and operational capabilities. Unfortunately, its performance was cancelled due to high winds, which posed a safety risk. Similarly, the Swiss Air Force Patrouille Suisse, known for its precision flying and dramatic aerobatic routines, had to withdraw from the event at the last minute due to operational issues. Their absence was keenly felt, as they were one of the most anticipated acts of the day. The Patrouille Suisse has a reputation for delivering high-energy performances that captivate audiences, and their withdrawal was a disappointment for many aviation enthusiasts.

Despite these setbacks, the airshow was a resounding success. The performances that did take place were nothing short of spectacular, showcasing the skill, precision, and dedication of the pilots and their teams. The Red Arrows’ display was a highlight, bringing an element of grandeur and excitement to the event. The Flying Bulls added a touch of nostalgia and highlighted the rich aviation history. While the absence of the Airbus A320neo and the Patrouille Suisse was regrettable, the airshow still managed to deliver a memorable experience for all in attendance.

The event served as a celebration of aviation excellence, highlighting the advanced technology and impressive capabilities of modern aircraft. It was a day filled with excitement, awe, and admiration for the pilots and their incredible machines.
