AIRPOWER24: First Batch of Participants Announced
The Austrian Armed Forces, in collaboration with the Province of Styria and Red Bull, have released the first batch of participants for the eagerly awaited AIRPOWER24 airshow, scheduled to take place on the 6th and 7th of September 2024 at Hinterstoisser Air Base in Zeltweg.
This announcement marks the beginning of what promises to be an extraordinary event, featuring a rich array of static displays and dynamic flying demonstrations from both military and civilian aviation sectors. Notably, AIRPOWER24 will once again be free for all visitors, ensuring accessibility to a broad audience.
Aerobatic Teams
So far, three elite aerobatic teams have been confirmed to participate in the event;
First, the Swiss Air Force’s Patrouille Suisse will captivate the audience with their precision flying in six Northrop F-5E Tiger II fighter jets. Known for their meticulous coordination and breathtaking manoeuvres, Patrouille Suisse has a long-standing reputation for excellence in aerial displays. The F-5E Tiger II, a supersonic light fighter, will demonstrate its agility and speed, underscoring the team’s superior flying skills and the aircraft’s advanced capabilities.
Next, the Spanish Air and Space Forces’ Patrulla Águila will showcase their talents in six Spanish-built CASA C-101 Aviojet trainers. Patrulla Águila is renowned for their intricate formations and synchronized aerobatics, which highlight the agility and versatility of the C-101 Aviojet. This aircraft, designed primarily as a trainer, will exhibit its impressive performance characteristics as the team executes a series of complex aerial routines, demonstrating both precision and grace.
Lastly, the Croatian Air Force’s Krila Oluje (Wings of Storm) will present a captivating performance in six Pilatus PC-9M turboprop trainers. The Krila Oluje team is celebrated for their dynamic displays and the distinctive sound of their turboprop engines. The PC-9M, a highly manoeuvrable and reliable aircraft, will be put through its paces as the team performs a variety of thrilling aerobatic manoeuvres, showcasing the aircraft’s robustness and the pilots’ exceptional skill.
Austrian Air Force
The Austrian Air Force will play a significant role, contributing significantly to both the flying and static displays. Attendees will have the opportunity to witness a diverse and comprehensive lineup of Austrian military aircraft, each showcasing the technological prowess and versatility of the nation’s air defence capabilities.
The flying displays will feature the formidable Eurofighter Typhoon, a state-of-the-art multirole fighter known for its agility and advanced avionics. Complementing this will be the robust Lockheed C-130K Hercules, renowned for its strategic airlift capabilities, and the agile Pilatus PC-7 Turbo Trainer, which is essential for pilot training. Additionally, the versatile Pilatus PC-6 Turbo Porter will demonstrate its short takeoff and landing (STOL) capabilities, while the Diamond DA-40 NG will showcase its role in training and light utility operations.
Helicopter enthusiasts will be thrilled to see the Agusta Bell AB-212, known for its reliability and versatility, and the Sikorsky S-70 Black Hawk, a mainstay in tactical transport and medevac missions. The Bell OH-58 “Kiowa” will also be on display, highlighting its reconnaissance and light attack capabilities. A notable highlight will be the Airpower debut of the Leonardo AW169, replacing the venerable Aérospatiale Alouette III. This modern, versatile helicopter will demonstrate its advanced capabilities and operational flexibility, marking a significant upgrade in the Austrian Air Force’s rotary-wing fleet.
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the F-16 Fighting Falcon, AIRPOWER24 will feature a significant presence of this iconic aircraft from several nations. F-16s from Poland, Belgium, Greece, and Turkey will be prominently displayed both on the ground and in the air, underscoring the aircraft’s enduring legacy and continued relevance in modern air combat. At this moment it is not known which F-16s will take part in the flying displays besides the Polish Tiger Demo Team whichhas already confirmed their participation in the flying displays, promising a thrilling showcase of the F-16’s agility and performance.
Flying Displays
The flying displays promise to be a spectacular showcase of both military and civilian aviation prowess, featuring an impressive and diverse array of flying displays from around the globe.
Attendees can look forward to solo displays by the German Army Aviation Corps, which will feature the NH Industries NH90, a versatile medium-lift helicopter, and the Airbus H665 “Tiger,” a cutting-edge attack helicopter known for its agility and advanced weaponry systems. These displays will highlight the operational capabilities and technological sophistication of these rotary-wing aircraft.
The event will also feature thrilling solo performances by the McDonnell Douglas F-18 Hornet, with displays from both the Swiss and Finnish Air Forces. The F-18 Hornet’s combination of speed, manoeuvrability, and firepower will be on full display, showcasing the aircraft’s formidable capabilities in air combat.
Adding to the excitement, the Gripen Solo Displays from the Czech and Hungarian Air Forces will demonstrate the agility and advanced avionics of the Saab JAS 39 Gripen, a multi-role fighter known for its versatility and cost-effectiveness. The Czech Air Force’s PZL W-3A Sokol will perform their renowned Search and Rescue (SAR) demonstration, providing a dramatic and informative display of this aircraft’s critical role in emergency operations.
The German Air Force will contribute to the lineup with solo displays of their Eurofighter Typhoon, a highly advanced multirole fighter, and the Airbus A400M, a versatile military transport aircraft capable of performing a wide range of missions from strategic airlift to medical evacuation.
The Italian Air Force will present an exciting trio of aircraft for their flying display. This includes the Leonardo T-346A Master, a sophisticated jet trainer; the Eurofighter Typhoon, demonstrating its superior combat capabilities; and the Leonardo C-27J Spartan, a tactical airlifter known for its robustness and versatility. These aircraft will be flown by test pilots from the 311° Gruppo Volo (Experimental Flight Unit), ensuring a display of exceptional skill and precision.
The Slovenian Air Force and Air Defence’s award-winning PC-9M Solo Display will also be a highlight of the show, showcasing the agility and performance of the Pilatus PC-9M turboprop trainer in a dynamic and engaging routine.
Further enhancing the event, the US Air Force will feature the Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II, a fifth-generation multirole stealth fighter, renowned for its advanced capabilities in both air superiority and strike missions. Additionally, the Horsemen Flight Team, the world’s only P-51 Mustang formation aerobatic team, will deliver a nostalgic and thrilling performance, celebrating the legacy of this iconic World War II fighter.
The Blanix Team will also captivate the audience with their fantastic two-ship glider formation aerobatic routine, demonstrating the beauty and precision of unpowered flight.
Static Displays
The static display will be an extraordinary exhibition of aviation technology, featuring a diverse array of remarkable aircraft from various military and defence organizations around the world.
The Embraer C-390 Millennium, a versatile and modern tactical airlifter, will be on display, showcasing its capabilities in transport, medical evacuation, and aerial refuelling missions. This aircraft is known for its impressive payload capacity and advanced avionics, making it a significant asset for any air force.
From Serbia, the Soko G-2GL Galeb will be featured, offering attendees a glimpse of this classic jet trainer and light attack aircraft, which has served as a reliable platform for pilot training and light combat roles.
The German Army Aviation Corps will present a trio of advanced helicopters, including the Airbus H665 “Tiger,” an attack helicopter renowned for its agility and firepower; the Airbus H135, a light utility helicopter widely used for training and emergency medical services; and the NH Industries NH90, a medium-lift helicopter known for its versatility in various military operations.
The Belgian Air Component will showcase the Airbus A400M, a state-of-the-art military transport aircraft capable of performing a wide range of missions, from strategic airlift to tactical deployment and medical evacuation.
The Czech Air Force will display the Aero L-159 ALCA, a light combat and advanced trainer aircraft that combines modern avionics and weapon systems, highlighting its role in both training and light attack missions.
The German Air Force will present an impressive lineup, including the Sikorsky CH-53 Sea Stallion, a heavy-lift transport helicopter essential for troop and cargo transport; the multi-role H145M Helicopter, known for its versatility and advanced mission capabilities; and the Panavia PA-200 Tornado, a multirole combat aircraft with a distinguished service record in various air force operations.
The German Navy will feature the Lockheed P-3 Orion, an anti-submarine and maritime surveillance aircraft renowned for its long-range capabilities and advanced sensor systems, critical for maritime patrol and reconnaissance missions.
The Serbian Air Force and Air Defence will showcase their new Airbus C-295 tactical airlifter, highlighting its capabilities in troop transport, cargo missions, and medical evacuation, underscoring its role as a versatile and reliable aircraft in various operational scenarios.
The Slovak Air Force will display their Mi-17, a medium twin-turbine transport helicopter known for its robustness and capability in a wide range of missions, from transport to search and rescue operations.
The US Air Force will feature two of its most advanced aircraft: the Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II, a fifth-generation multirole stealth fighter known for its advanced avionics, stealth capabilities, and superior combat performance; and the Boeing KC-46 Pegasus, an aerial refuelling and strategic military transport aircraft that plays a critical role in extending the operational range of combat aircraft and providing logistical support.
Flying Bulls
As a key partner in the event, Red Bull’s Flying Bulls will bring nearly their entire fleet from Salzburg, promising a stunning array of in-air performances that will captivate spectators. The Flying Bulls are renowned for their meticulously restored aircraft and breathtaking aerial displays, and their participation will undoubtedly be a highlight of the event.
Among the aircraft taking to the skies, attendees can look forward to the dynamic performances of the Alphajet Duo, showcasing precision flying and synchronized aerobatics. The majestic Douglas DC-6 will also grace the air, demonstrating the elegance and power of this vintage airliner.
The Vought F4U “Corsair,” with its distinctive gull-wing design, will perform, highlighting its storied history as a formidable fighter in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Alongside it, the North American B-25 “Mitchell,” a twin-engine bomber famed for the Doolittle Raid, will display its robust flying capabilities.
The North American T-6 “Texan,” a legendary advanced trainer, will demonstrate its agility and historical significance in pilot training. Complementing this will be the North American T-28 “Trojan,” another vital training aircraft known for its versatility.
The iconic North American P-51 “Mustang,” revered for its role in achieving air superiority during World War II, will perform, showcasing its speed and manoeuvrability. The Beechcraft T-34 Mentor, a primary trainer, will also be part of the display, illustrating its role in shaping the skills of countless pilots.
The Boeing PT-17 Stearman and Fairchild PT-19, both primary trainers from the World War II era, will take to the skies, offering a nostalgic glimpse into the early days of military aviation training. The Pilatus PC-6 Turbo Porter will demonstrate its exceptional STOL (short takeoff and landing) capabilities, crucial for operations in challenging environments.
The Lockheed P-38 Lightning, with its distinctive twin-boom design, will perform, showcasing the innovative engineering that made it a formidable fighter during World War II. The agile BO105 helicopter will display its remarkable aerobatic capabilities, a rare feat for rotary-wing aircraft.
The Bell AH-1F/209 “Cobra,” an attack helicopter, will highlight its combat prowess, while the Sukhoi SU-29 and Extra 300 will perform precision aerobatics, demonstrating the skill and artistry of aerobatic flying. The Eurocopter EC135, a versatile light utility helicopter, will also be part of the aerial display.
The Bristol 171 Sycamore, a pioneering helicopter design, will offer a historical perspective on rotary-wing aviation. The Cessna 337 Skymaster “Push Pull,” with its unique twin-boom configuration, and the amphibious Cessna 208 “Caravan” will showcase their versatility in various operational roles. The rugged AVIAT Husky will round out the aerial performances, demonstrating its capabilities in bush flying.
Additionally, the Flying Bulls will present the Bell 47, an iconic helicopter recognized for its bubble canopy and role in early helicopter operations, and the AS350 Écureuil, a versatile light utility helicopter, in the static display. These aircraft will provide attendees with an up-close view of their design and engineering marvels.
AIRPOWER24 is set to be an unparalleled event, celebrating aviation history and modern advancements.
