RCAF Heritage Formation and First US Air Force Aircraft Announced for RIAT 2024

The Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) organizers have unveiled an exciting update for the 2024 show, featuring both flying and static displays that promise to captivate aviation enthusiasts. Among the highlights are the first United States Air Force aircraft confirmed for static display and a special heritage formation to celebrate the Centennial of the Royal Canadian Air Force.

The highlight for many attendees will be the final appearance of the KC-10 Extender, a venerable air-to-air refuelling tanker, which will be on static display. This iconic aircraft will also support the deployment of two F-16 Fighting Falcons from the 93rd Fighter Squadron “Makos,” joining the Viper Line. In addition to the KC-10, other USAF ‘heavies’ slated for static display include the C-17 Globemaster III and the KC-46 Pegasus, both of which will be open for public viewing during the show.

From RAF Mildenhall, the line-up includes a KC-135 Stratotanker, an MC-130J Commando II, and an RC-135 Rivet Joint—the latter making a much-anticipated return to RIAT after several years. Additionally, a C-21 Learjet from Ramstein Air Base will be on display. Most of these US Department of Defense aircraft will be stationed at the western end of the airfield, accessible to the public on Saturday and Sunday. More American aircraft are expected to be added to the line-up, pending final paperwork approvals.

Friday visitors will be treated to a spectacular opening as the RAF Falcons Parachute Display Team drops into RIAT from a C-17 Globemaster III. This aircraft will then transition to a static display for the remainder of the weekend, allowing attendees to explore its impressive interior.

In celebration of the Centennial of the Royal Canadian Air Force, another exciting addition to the flying display is a Supermarine Spitfire Vb from The Fighter Collection at Duxford. Adorned in the colours of 402 Squadron RCAF, this historic aircraft will perform on Saturday and Sunday. The Spitfire Vb is set to partake in a ‘heritage formation’ alongside the CF-188 Hornet, creating a poignant tribute to the RCAF’s storied history.

The static display line-up has also been bolstered with three new additions from aircraft manufacturers. The Gulfstream G700 and King Air B300 will be prominently featured in the central ‘showcase’ area, while the Grob 120TP will be displayed alongside other training aircraft. These additions promise to offer a comprehensive look at both current and future aviation technologies.

The Royal International Air Tattoo 2024 is shaping up to be an extraordinary event, blending historical significance with modern aviation marvels. With so many unique aircraft on display and thrilling performances planned, this year’s show is set to captivate and inspire aviation enthusiasts from around the world. Mark your calendars for this unparalleled celebration of aviation excellence.
