About the aircraft
The Aero L-159 ALCA is a subsonic light combat aircraft and advanced trainer developed in the Czech Republic by Aero Vodochody. Its design evolved from the L-59 Super Albatros, which itself was derived from the L-39 Albatros. Development began in 1993 to modernize the Czech Air Force, leading to a government order for 72 L-159A single-seat aircraft. The L-159 made its maiden flight in 1997, and the first production unit was delivered in 2000.
Due to budget cuts, the Czech fleet was reduced from 72 to 24 aircraft by 2003, with many surplus planes sold to international operators, including the Iraqi Air Force, which has used them in combat against ISIS. The L-159 is available in several variants, including the single-seat L-159A and the two-seat L-159B trainer. It features a Honeywell turbofan engine, advanced avionics, and multiple hardpoints for various weapons. Production resumed in 2017, with new aircraft being built for international customers. The L-159 has proven to be a versatile platform for both combat and training roles.
