Russian Knights
About the Team
The “Russian Knights” is an illustrious aerobatic demonstration team of the Russian Air Force, celebrated for its breathtaking aerial performances and an impressive array of world records. Established on April 5, 1991, the team traces its origins back to the 1st Aviation Squadron of the 234th Guards Proskurovsky Mixed Aviation Regiment, which is based at the historic Kubinka airfield, located near Moscow. This strategic site has long been a focal point for Russian aviation, providing the perfect backdrop for the team’s remarkable displays.
The Russian Knights specialize in both formation and solo aerobatics, showcasing their exceptional piloting skills on highly maneuverable multipurpose fighter jets. The team’s current aircraft include the advanced Su-35S and Su-30SM models, both of which represent the pinnacle of Russian aerospace engineering. In 2016, the Knights transitioned to the Su-30SM, a modern multirole fighter that enhances their capabilities, and by 2019-2020, they incorporated the Su-35S into their fleet, which also retains the iconic Su-27. This unique combination of aircraft is particularly noteworthy, as the Russian Knights are the only aerobatic team in the world that performs formation aerobatics using “heavy fighter” class aircraft. Furthermore, all the aircraft utilized by the team are production models, devoid of any specialized modifications for their displays, showcasing the inherent capabilities of these remarkable machines.
The Russian Knights are not merely performers; they are ambassadors of Russian aviation, participating in numerous air shows across Russia and internationally. Their captivating performances have earned them a dedicated following, and they are a constant presence at major aviation events, where they dazzle audiences with their precision and artistry. Each display is a testament to the skill and dedication of the pilots, who undergo rigorous training to master the complex maneuvers that define their performances. The team’s commitment to excellence and innovation ensures that they remain at the forefront of aerobatic aviation, continually pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the skies.

About the aircraft
The Sukhoi Su-35S and Su-30SM are both advanced, multirole fighter aircraft developed by Russia, forming key components of the Russian Air Force’s modern fleet. Building on the legacy of the Su-27 family, the Su-35S serves as a highly maneuverable, single-seat supermaneuverable air superiority fighter, while the Su-30SM is a twin-seat variant designed for versatility and extended operational roles. Both aircraft incorporate sophisticated avionics and powerful engines, featuring thrust-vectoring capabilities that enhance their agility and performance in various combat scenarios.
Equipped with cutting-edge radar and sensor systems, the Su-35S utilizes the Irbis-E phased-array radar to achieve superior target detection and tracking, enabling it to engage a wide spectrum of aerial and ground threats with precision. In contrast, the Su-30SM is fitted with the N011M Bars radar, which offers extended range and improved target acquisition, complemented by advanced electronic warfare and navigation systems. This makes the Su-30SM exceptionally capable in diverse missions such as air superiority, ground attack, reconnaissance, and maritime strike, while the Su-35S primarily excels in establishing air dominance and executing high-intensity combat roles.
Both aircraft are armed with a comprehensive array of modern weaponry, including air-to-air missiles, air-to-ground munitions, and advanced targeting pods, allowing them to perform complex missions effectively. The Su-35S, with its single-seat configuration, focuses on maximizing combat efficiency and situational awareness for the pilot, whereas the Su-30SM’s twin-seat setup provides enhanced operational flexibility, enabling better crew coordination and mission management. Together, the Su-35S and Su-30SM offer the Russian Air Force a balanced combination of raw power, technological sophistication, and tactical adaptability, ensuring robust air superiority and versatile combat capabilities across a wide range of military operations.
Team History
The history of the Russian Knights is a captivating narrative filled with significant milestones, challenges, and triumphs that reflect the evolution of aerobatic aviation in Russia. In the years following World War II, pilots at Kubinka airfield flew a variety of Mikoyan Design Bureau fighters, including the MiG-15, MiG-17, MiG-19, MiG-21, MiG-23, and MiG-29. This rich heritage laid the groundwork for the introduction of the Su-27 fighters to the 1st Aviation Squadron in May 1989, marking a pivotal shift in the squadron’s capabilities and setting the stage for the formation of the Russian Knights.
By early 1991, the team had grown to six aircraft, and on April 5 of that year, the Russian Knights were officially founded. Their first international exposure came just months later, on August 24, 1991, at an air show in Poznan, Poland. This debut marked the beginning of a new era for the team, as they quickly gained recognition for their stunning aerial displays. The following autumn, the Russian Knights made their presence felt in England, performing above the Queen Mother’s palace in Scotland, followed by shows in Leuchars and Finningley. These performances showcased their skill and artistry, solidifying their reputation on the international stage.
The 1990s were a period of rapid growth and development for the Russian Knights. They embarked on international tours, performing at prestigious air shows in Malaysia, the USA, and France. Their performances not only highlighted their technical prowess but also fostered camaraderie with other aerobatic teams, including the British Red Arrows and the French Patrouille de France. In a poignant moment, the team was invited to participate in the 50th anniversary of the Normandie-Niemen Regiment in Reims, France, where they executed simultaneous piloting with two groups of four aircraft, further showcasing their capabilities.
Tragedy struck in December 1995 when three jets crashed during a return flight from an air show in Malaysia, resulting in the loss of four pilots. This devastating event tested the resilience of the team, yet they emerged stronger, continuing to perform and innovate. The late 1990s and early 2000s saw the Russian Knights participating in numerous significant events, including the Zhuhai air show in China and the 60th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, where they performed a historical flight above Red Square, a symbol of national pride.
As the team celebrated its 15th and 20th anniversaries, they continued to push the boundaries of aerobatic performance, introducing new formations and stunts, such as the “Kubinka Diamond,” a horizontal barrel roll performed by a group of nine aircraft. These milestones were not just celebrations of their past but also reflections of their commitment to excellence and innovation in the field of aerobatics.
The Russian Knights have consistently demonstrated their prowess in the skies, participating in various international air shows and commemorative events that highlight their skills and the capabilities of their aircraft. Their legacy continues to inspire future generations of aviators and aviation enthusiasts, as they maintain their status as one of the most prestigious aerobatic teams in the world. Today, the Russian Knights remain dedicated to their craft, performing formation aerobatic flights with ten aircraft alongside the Swifts team, while also showcasing their remarkable synchro displays and solo performances, ensuring that their storied history continues to unfold in the skies above.
