Belgian Air Force to Showcase A109 Tactical Demonstration at International Sanicole Airshow 2024

Hechtel-Eksel, Belgium – Aviation enthusiasts and military aficionados alike are in for a rare treat at the upcoming International Sanicole Airshow. On Sunday, September 22, 2024, the Belgian Air Force’s 17 Squadron from Beauvechain will perform a highly anticipated tactical demonstration featuring two Agusta A109 helicopters. This unique performance by the Role Demo Team ‘Mighty Griffons’ promises to be a highlight of the airshow, which runs over the weekend with a special Sunset Airshow on Saturday, September 21, followed by the Full Airshow on Sunday.

The Sanicole Airshow organizers expressed their enthusiasm, stating, “Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the F-16 in style at the International Sanicole Airshow on 21 & 22 September. In 1975, the United States presented the F-16 in Belgium for the first time, ushering in a new era thanks to the stunning performance of this revolutionary fighter, owing to its fly-by-wire control system.”

The F-16, a cornerstone of modern aerial combat, has not been showcased by the US Air Force in Belgium since 1987. This year, however, marks a significant milestone—the 50th anniversary of the aircraft. Attendees will be treated to a spectacular display by the US Viper Demo Team, led by Captain Taylor “FEMA” Hiester. Captain Hiester’s performance will highlight the tactical capabilities of the F-16 through a series of fluid maneuvers, showcasing its unparalleled agility, power, and speed.

The aircraft in focus, a modern Block 52 F-16, is permanently based at Spangdahlem Air Force Base in Germany. Its demonstration will not only emphasize the aircraft’s advanced flying characteristics but also feature one of the most compelling soundtracks in the airshow circuit, enhancing the overall experience for spectators.

The F-16 Viper Demo Team’s appearance adds to an already stellar lineup of performers at the Sanicole Airshow. Other notable displays include solo performances by Turkish and Danish F-16s, a four-ship F-16 display by the Belgian Air Force Thunder Tigers, and demonstrations by other prominent aircraft such as the German Typhoon, French Rafale, Finnish Hornet, and the Swiss Patrouille Suisse.

The International Sanicole Airshow, renowned for its rich history and captivating performances, promises to be an exhilarating event this year. Aviation enthusiasts and the general public alike can look forward to an unforgettable experience, celebrating the legacy and continuing prowess of the iconic F-16.
